Athenry Town is located in the West of Ireland in County Galway. Situated halfway between Galway City and Ballinsloe.
History of Athenry
Athenry is known worldwide mainly due to the song associated with it, The Fields of Athenry. In the town is the magnificent castle built by de Bermingham between 1235 and 1250. It is a typical Anglo-Norman stronghold comprising of a keep and a walled court or bawn. Located in the town's market place is a ruined cross with a representation of the Crucifixion on one side and the Virgin and Child on the other.
